Activating a service
For eligible Lumen® Dedicated Internet Access or IP VPN services, you can activate a service on your own using Lumen Connect®. If the service is eligible, the activation email includes a link to sign in and activate the service.
Note: To activate a service in Lumen Connect, you need the Activation Self-Service permission assigned to your user profile. If you don't have this permission, create a portal support ticket to request it. (When you create the ticket, select Access/Control Center Access, select Access Issues, then select Modify Access/Permissions.)
To activate a service:
- Using the left menu, click Services, click Service Tools, then click Self-Service Activation.
- Click the link in the activation email we sent you or search for the service you want to activate by doing one of the following:
- To search by order number, click the Order Number tab, type the order number, then click Search. In the Service ID field that appears, select the service, then click Next: Review Service.
- To search by service ID, click the Service ID tab, type the service ID, then click Search, then click Next: Review Service.
- To search by circuit ID, click the Circuit ID tab, type the circuit ID, then click Search, then click Next: Review Service.
- To search by order number, click the Order Number tab, type the order number, then click Search. In the Service ID field that appears, select the service, then click Next: Review Service.
Lumen Connect shows the details for the service.
- Review the details for the service. If you need to change information in a field (e.g., whether you want Auto Negotiation), click the
edit icon, make the change, then click Save.
- When you're done, click Next: Configure Network.
- Answer the interface configuration questions: verify the handoff media type and whether your devices is connected to the demarc or demarc device. When you're, click Continue.
Lumen checks the connection status for device and shows the result.

- Once you verify the link status is Up, select Yes, then click Continue.
Lumen Connect shows your virtual local area network configuration (CVLAN).
- Verify the information shown, then click Continue.
Lumen Connect shows the IP configuration information for the service.
- Once you configure your IP/subnet mask, click Yes.
Lumen Connect starts a ping test to your IP to verify connectivity, then shows the results of the test.
- If you're able to ping the Lumen gateway, click Yes, then click Continue.
Lumen Connect shows the routing protocol configuration.
- Review the information shown, then configure the border gateway protocol (BGP) on your device.
- Once you configure the BGP on your device, click Yes.
Lumen Connect status the BGP status and shows the results of the test.
- Verify the routing protocol status on your device. If the BGP shows Established status, click Yes, then click Next: Test Service.
- Complete any additional testing according to your organization's standards, including configuring the service and testing performance. Be sure to also verify that you can ping and verify your routing is working correctly.
- When you're done, select the checkbox to acknowledge that you're finished testiong, then click Complete Service Activation.
- In the confirmation window that appears, click Yes, proceed.
Lumen Connect finishes activation process and creates a self-activation report with order details, service details, and network-configuration information. (To download the report for your records, click Lumen self-activation report.)
